Sandstone & Lime Pointing

Traditional lime pointing to preserve & protect historic masonry.

Based in Fife — working across Scotland

What we do

  • Hand-raking out failed cement pointing that traps moisture in the stone.
  • Re-pointing in breathable lime mortars matched to the original mix and colour.
  • Tenement and period property specialists, working from scaffold or access towers.
  • Lime harling and render repairs to weather-worn elevations.

Problems we fix

  • Hard cement pointing forcing damp into the sandstone face
  • Open, washed-out joints letting water into the wall
  • Damp and salting on internal walls of solid-stone properties
  • Spalling and crumbling stone around eroded joints

Questions

Why use lime mortar rather than cement?
Traditional stone buildings were built to breathe. Cement pointing is harder than the stone, so trapped moisture escapes through the sandstone face instead of the joint — which is what causes spalling and damp. Lime mortar is softer and breathable, so the wall dries out and the stone survives.
Do you work on listed buildings?
Yes. We work with traditional materials and conservation-minded methods. Listed building consent is usually required for external work — we're happy to talk through what your property needs before you apply.
Do you provide free surveys?
Yes. Every enquiry starts with a free survey and a written, no-obligation quote. If we don't think work is needed, we'll say so.
How far do you travel?
We're based in Fife and work across Scotland, including Edinburgh, Perth, Dundee, Stirling and the surrounding areas. Tell us where the property is and we'll confirm.
