Honest answers
Common Questions
No cement smeared over sandstone, no shortcuts hidden under paint. Here's how we work and why.
- Why use lime mortar rather than cement?
- Traditional stone buildings were built to breathe. Cement pointing is harder than the stone, so trapped moisture escapes through the sandstone face instead of the joint — which is what causes spalling and damp. Lime mortar is softer and breathable, so the wall dries out and the stone survives.
- Do you work on listed buildings?
- Yes. We work with traditional materials and conservation-minded methods. Listed building consent is usually required for external work — we're happy to talk through what your property needs before you apply.
- Do you provide free surveys?
- Yes. Every enquiry starts with a free survey and a written, no-obligation quote. If we don't think work is needed, we'll say so.
- How far do you travel?
- We're based in Fife and work across Scotland, including Edinburgh, Perth, Dundee, Stirling and the surrounding areas. Tell us where the property is and we'll confirm.
- Can you match existing sandstone or slate?
- In most cases, yes. Stone indents are cut and matched to the existing masonry, and we source natural slate to suit the roof rather than substituting a modern tile that looks wrong.
- Are you insured?
- Yes — we're fully insured, and we're happy to send our certificate over with your quote.
- How do I know if the work is urgent?
- Active leaks, water coming through a ceiling and storm damage should be looked at straight away. Send us photos with your enquiry and we'll tell you honestly whether it needs a call-out or can wait for a planned repair.
